Just found those purple baby socks. I placed on them on the dresser an hour ago turned around and they were gone...Oscar had them and now he's rolling around on the floor with them like they're a mouse. Adorable.

Realizing I go back to work in seven days! Ugh

Our table was getting over loaded with cucumbers. So I finally decided to do something about it. I had canned tomatoes with a friend several weeks ago and felt pretty confident to try pickles out. So several hours later I have nine jars of pickles. Hopefully they taste good!

Obsessed with tiny houses

Curtis and I live in a pretty small house that we inherited...I don't know the square footage but it's gotta be like 850 square feet. It only has four rooms. Two bedrooms a living room and a kitchen. I love it!
We are currently renovating and while searching books on how to organize best in a small house I came upon a book about tiny houses. I mean really tiny houses...like less then 300 square feet, some that are only 100!
Now I am obsessed with tiny houses. I want to live either in village of tiny houses, on a tiny tiny house on a mountaintop with a beautiful view or on a tropical island. I haven't decided yet.
Well, I think I'll stick with my mortgage/rent free smallish house for awhile...save up you know.
Anyway check out the tiny house video above. The guy is hilarious.

Ohhhh, I didn't do anything besides get a new doggy! Sadie is the name of my new little girl, a 3 year old golden retriever. Her story is that she was bought from a breeder by some awful people who ended up abusing her. She was rescued by some neighbors who couldn't keep her. So I found her through a craigslist ad. She is a super sweet, gentle dog. She doesn't bark and I am wondering if that is due to having had a shock collar on her when found....I've been wanting a second dog for awhile. Finally, after having looked for some time I find my dog. I'm happy to have her and for her to have a safe home.

The one person who I can think of when the words pop icon are brought up is Michael Jackson. I have so many memories of him and the videos that would come on MTV. "Thriller"-I was always so afraid to watch because I thought it was like watching a scary movie. "Billy Jean" and "Beat It"-I loved to sing a long with. "ABC"-how can not sing along to and then have that song stuck in your head all day long. Does anyone remember the movie, The Jacksons: An American Dream, and how sad you felt watching how badly abused that family was by their father? I remember watching "The Way You Make Me Feel" video and totally wanting to be the actress in that video and get snapped at by Michael Jackson....I think that is when I actually thought Michael Jackson was super sexy, or maybe I was old enough by that point to feel that way. "The Man in the Mirror" was an insanely sad video but still gave hope of the world coming together such as with the story of Baby Jessica which has a small clip in the video. Oh gosh then I think of "Bad" and how dangerous and sexy Michael looked in that video. I hear the beat of that song as I type this. Then there was "Smooth Criminal" and the video to me was like an incredibly good movie! It is like all of his music videos defined what MTV was all about. He is an icon for creating memorable moments and changing the way our culture reacts and adapts to new styles. He continued to do this with songs and videos such as "Black and White", "Remember the Time", and "In the Closet" (helloooo Naomi and Michael!!). So upon reflecting about MJ, I guess I would have to say that my favorite video of his was definitely "The Way You Make Me Feel".

So I have been dogsitting/housesitting in the West End. Please remind me not to ever do this again. I have always known that I hate venturing out to the Short Pump/Glen Allen area of Richmond but now I have more confirmation as to why. The main reason is inconvenience. As many restaurants and shops as there are in the West End I find I don't want to go to any of these places because of the traffic, the parking, the families, the traffic lights, the congestion, the construction....I hate it. I feel like I am back in Tampa where it takes a good 20-30 minutes to go 10 miles down the road. By the time I get to the house I am staying at after work, to let the dogs out, I am so stressed from all of the driving that I dread having to get back in my car to go to the gym. I don't even want to go to the store because it is going to be filled with mommies and daddies and kids running all over the f-ing place. I am feeling really frazzled because I am so out of my element and quaint little world that the City of Richmond provides me. Ugh, I can't wait until this week is over with!

I went to one of those free movie previews of Away We Go. The movie was a good indie film that is relevant to young couples who are expecting, or already have kids an a family. What I liked best about the film was the soundtrack that played along with the couple traveling from Madison, Tucson, to Montreal, to Miami...

'Away We Go' Soundtrack Due June 2, Features Alexi Murdoch, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, The Velvet Underground

We've already noted that London-born, Scottish-bred indie folkie Alexi Murdoch is doing the music to Sam Mendes' indie dramedy, "Away We Go."

His song, "All My Days," from his 2006 debut album, Time Without Consequence (the song was also featured on an episode of "The O.C.") soundtracks the trailer for the film, but it's unclear if his "music by" credit means an original score, because all the music on the "Away We Go," soundtrack is pre-existing material from the aforementioned album and his debut EP.

Still, the soundtrack, which is due June 2, might act as a good intro to those that aren't familiar with his work (and we'll admit, we're no experts). The 13-song CD also features classic cuts by George Harrison, Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground and The Stranglers (way to go music supervisor Randall Poster - of Wes Anderson-film fame, though surely that's getting tiring to him).

Summer Reading

I usually don't read books by popular authors. I feel, like with music, there is way too much good stuff you can find on your own rather than go with what is popular. Anyways, I have had countless people, since the Stephanie Plum series started, tell me how much they enjoy Janet Evanovich books. Finally, after Sally gave me, One for the Money, and has been raving about this series nonstop (as mentioned in an earlier blog post) I decided to finally start the ever so popular series. The result is that I LOVE IT! OMG! The writing is hilarious, action packed, and fun! So I have now requested the box of all 14 books from the series. A library coworker keeps the whole set stashed in the office for others to use. I highly suggest if you don't have a box in your office, like I do, you should check one out at your local public library and start reading this series by Janet Evanovich.

I am in love with foam hand soap. I can't stop using it! We have it at work and I have it at home. I am officially obsessed with washing my hands. I don't know what it is about this type of soap but it feels like air versus gooey, sticky stuff. You can get this type of soap in all different types of brands and varying prices. I highly recommend you to start using foaming hand soap, seriously.

Mother's Day Brunch

Mother's Day consisted of my first attempt at making my Mom a frittata for brunch. I was very pleased with the results, hence my picture.
In any case my sister and I rocked it yesterday preparing our Mom a fabulous brunch! It was a beautiful day to celebrate how great our Mom is. We all had a nice time chatting and eating outside on the back porch. The menu consisted of:
Fruit: Strawberries and Blackberries
Beverage: Fresh Squeezed OJ and Coffee
Emily made: Incredible French Toast using Challah bread and a Rustic French Loaf
The recipe was obtained from one of the best cookbooks I know of: The New Best Recipe
I made: A frittata with sauteed tomato's, onions,
pancetta, cilantro, parsley, salt, peppar, eggs,
habanero cheese, and then topped the frittata with
sliced avocado.

I have the first one that I will get to this summer then I might find out what "pip" really means? A perfect weekend

Fri Day: Lunch at Coast with Suzanne. The owner of Enotecca Sagno opened up a new restaurant in the Libby Grove Area. Beautiful restaurant. It is worth going just to see the interior decor. The menu is very pricey but the food is incredibly fresh. The focus is on seafood, hence the name Coast.
Fri Night: Ashley and I started out with dinner and wine on her back porch. Then hit the Firehouse Theater to see the The Great American Trailer Park Musical. I would highly recommend going to see this musical. I am not a fan of them but this one got us all laughing out loud, many many times. The parody of Florida and trailer parks is dead on. Following we went for postshow drink. Ended up down by Gallery 5 and stopped to listen to the street performers play wonderful music that got the crowd dancing. It was such a great moment dancing in the street with Ashley and everyone else. The best part was dancing with the guy with a cane who was munching on a rice krispy treat. After our dance interlude we decided to try Marshall Street Cafe. We sat at the bar and ordered our dirty martinis. Another special moment was singing along with the band who was playing some wonderful soul/golden oldies music. I am definitely going back on a Friday night. The chicken wings looked delicious!
Sat Night: Had dinner with the parents and watched the Kentucky Derby. What a beautiful story Mind That Bird made. It was completely amazing watching that horse and jockey come from way behind the pack, snake up the rail, and shoot out forward. Beautiful.
Sun. Night: A group us from the restaurant met up for half price beers, oysters, shrimp, and mussels at CanCan. The bar scene there is full of old men who have no shame. Single girls and even girls with boyfriends do not go unless you want to be picked up by creepy older men. Lamest come on of the night "What do you do to get triceps like those?"=creepy old dude to my friend Tasha. Following our cocktail hour we all headed up to Edo's and had yet another delicious meal. Best part not paying for anything the whole night, being surrounded by great company, and incredible food.

There are certain cups that I like to drink out of because of the shape, the amount of liquid it can hold, and the grip. In particular my drinking cup at work consisted of my Lollapalooza/Sweet Leaf Tea plastic cup. This cup has served me well by holding lots of water, that I would refill through out the day from the library's water cooler. From heavy use this cup started to split down the side. I still held onto the Sweet Leaf cup despite the fact that if I didn't sip from the right side I would have water spill all over me from the crack. Well enough is enough after the tear has increased in size I can't hold as much water as I would like too. So the cup went in the trash and I actually feel kind of sad about this. Sweet Leaf Tea you served me well over the years and I will have to find a replacement at this year's Lollapalooza.

Okay so there is Amy who is home and there is Amy who goes out. When I am home, I want to collect my thoughts, chill out, eat, watch tv, read, not talk, and just be in my own world. When I go out, I want to throw down drinks, talk it out, laugh, eat, dance, flirt, etc. When I am come home I am prepared to simply focus on me. When I go out I am prepared to focus on others. Who I am when I am home is in a lot of ways someone who is a lot different from that girl who goes out. Am I the only one like this? It seems as though I have been called out on how I act when I am home versus when I go out and I don't see how I can be the same person in both situations when one is personal and the other is social? If your roommate has guests over do you stop, sit down, and socialize when you might be coming home to just veg out in your own space and your own world? Sure saying hi is always polite but what if you just go straight to your room? Does this create a negative atmosphere? In any case what I have realized is that you reach a certain point where you can either continue to live with people or you don't b/c you just want to live in your own little world. Hence my decision to move, yet again, back in with my parents. I need to buy my own damn place and need the open door (thank you mom and dad!) to save. OR I am moving out of the area b/c I found a professional librarian position in another state and thus I will be making more and being able to afford my own place. Which ever comes first needless to say, I will always from here on out be living on my own.

I am back on the 8:22 photo project! I was looking through the pictures I took for my same time 365 pictures and realized that it had been really therapeutic for me to do them. Some day when I have more time I am going to write a little snippet about where I was in my life in those 2 & 1/2 months, where I took a picture every day at the sametime, and why I think I stopped.
So, anyway, I am excited to start this project again with where I am now. I wish I hadn't stopped, but I realize I needed to, to get my head together and figure out what this project means to me. It turns out it that taking a picture at the same time every day and sharing it with the world really is important to me! Ha! Go figure.

A magical walk

Yesterday evening Ashley, Amanda, and I took the dogs to Bryan Park for a walk. The sun was out when we started but by the time we made it to the park big dark clouds rolled up on us. Down came the rain but it wasn't too bad that we had to end our walk. So partly covered by the trees we trekked on through the rain. The fun began with the rain actually because it was light enough and not too cold. We rounded the azalea's with bright colors of lavender, hot pink, light pink, white....and the trees with budding green leaves. The dogs were extra frisky with joy of playing in the rain and puddles. The rain eventually stopped and out came the sun again but this time joined by a rainbow, and not just one rainbow but two! From one end to the other there were two beautiful rainbows we wanted to catch. We came upon a clearing by the tennis courts and soccer fields to stop and take in the majestic beauty of sky. We were giggly with joy over how pretty the rainbows looked and wonderment about where the pot of gold was. Well to me, the gold was that walk spent with the girls, the dogs, and the nature. Sometimes you want more and you want to do more but really it it is moments that are as simple as a walk in the park that can really make you feel as though you have everything you need. I am loving how sappy this blog is sounding but deal with it.
Random note: On our way back Ashley spotted (hence her finger pointing) a baby bird egg which was sad but pretty at the same time. I thought I would add this pictures b/c it just went along with all that we were discovering on that spring evening.
Random note #2: Thank goodness for Amanda and never being without her phone. She was able to document our walk with her camera phone, thanks for the pictures A!

Softball? No, more like batting practice

Friday, I played in the 3L-v-Faculty Staff softball game at U of R. I knew it was going to be bad considering that people didn't have gloves, didn't know we needed gloves (Sally, thought the ball was soft enough to catch w/out a glove), and people were refusing to pitch. In any case, we lost 30-0. It was still fun though b/c it was a lovely day and we got to at least bat every inning. Best part was seeing Sally finally hit the softball on her very last swing of the game, yaay Sally! Btw the infamous Sally (my boss), is the second row with grey hair, black sunglasses, and white t-shirt. She is awesome.

How fortunate I am to have awesome friends who like great music.
Monday night: Roadtrip with the girls to Cville. Had a yummy dinner (although extemely bad service) at Bang. Headed onto the Outback Lodge for the Great Lake Swimmers show.
Kate Maki was the first opener. We got there for her last few songs and what I heard was soft and lovely. I would recommend checking out a good Canadian female singer/songwriter.
The Cinnamon Band went up next. Apparently the sound was given this 2 piece band a lot of trouble and they couldn't hear each other. Despite the obvious issues I couldn't help but be floored by the drummer. This guy was killing it and I can only imagine how much better he would be with a better sound/speaker system.
Finally the Great Lake Swimmers LIVE! Ohhh man what a great show. What incredibly eloquent lyrics. What talented musicians. I'm more in love.

Librarians on a field trip

What a day yesterday was! It started out with an introduction and lesson on how to navigate the Virginia General Assembly Website. Lots of good tips if anyone needs help on trying to find a bill or interpret one, hit yours truly up. Then a group of about 11 librarians proceeded from the Library of Virginia to the Virginia State Capital. We had a catered lunch with Senator Henry L. Marsh II and Senator Walter Stosch. Following the lunch the "Librarians", received a tour of the newly renovated Captial and I learned more bits and pieces of Virginia history. The best part was viewing the life size marble statue of George Washington. The Carrara marble statue is probably the best authentic portrayal of what George Washington looked like considering the artist, "made a plaster mask of Washington's face, took detailed measurements of his body, and modeled a terra cotta bust". Following the tour we had a mock senate session on voting for a bill. I sat in Senator William C. Wampler Jr.'s chair and voted "nay" in voting for the bill which would allow an armed person to buy an alcoholic beverage in a public place. The last part was having 2 news reporters talk to us about reporting about the legislators and the meetings. Columnist Jeff Schapiro of the RTD and Bob Lewis of the Associated Press. These two guys were highly informative and witty. I think I was more impressed with Jeff Schapiro's dapper pocket square, sports coat, and round eyeglasses....I think I have a new crush.

Weirdest part of the whole trip was meeting a "librarian" who directs the Suffolk 5th district circuit court library. She doesn't have her MLS, is deferring her law school admission, runs a 42 acre farm full of soybeans of something else, has 3 kids, a single mom, has to let the air out of her big mac truck to park in parking decks in Richmond (ie: LVA parking garage), and just show a coyote last week who was about to get her chickens. She ended up showing me pictures of a bobcat and a black mama bear with it's cub from her blackberry (she has surveillance camera's to capture shots of anyone and anything on her property). She ended up in her position as a "librarian" b/c the law librarian quit after 2 months and the circuit court board members decided to let her run the small library since she was an assistant. You never know what type of librarian you will meet in this world...

So I am going to Lollapalooza again this year. I didn't get to go to a music festival last summer year b/c of school and this year I most definitely plan on going to one. My cousin Andrew who lives in Chicago (across from Oprah's studio might I add) suggested Lollapalooza. Since I crashed at his place for the 2007 festival and had a blast, I of course agreed to do so again! I've been reading about the line up and getting more and more excited!

Everybody's getting antsy to hear who's playing the Lollapalooza festival, which takes place from Aug. 7 to 9 in Chicago's Grant Park — so much so that bloggers will even post "mostly true" lineups from so-called reputable sources.

Chicago Tribune and Billboard.com previously leaked that Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, Kings Of Leon and Jane's Addiction will be among the festival's headliners.

The Tribune also named Tool and The Killers as the fest's other headliners on Monday. The newspaper reported that The Decemberists are expected to play, as well as Lou Reed, who will have a late afternoon or early evening showcase with longtime bassist Fernando Saunders.

A post on the Faronheit blog states that the blogger was given a list of 60 artists that's "at least 90% correct" that are confirmed to play Lollapalooza.

The blogger is apparently friends with someone who works at Lollapalooza promoter C3 Presents and is "an inside source, a source I trust." Said source sent the blogger a list of performers, but threw "a few fake picks in with the real ones" as a safety precaution.

"How many exactly, I won't say," wrote the source in an email. "But I will promise you that this list is at least 90% correct. In other words, as much as 10% of this list could be fake... All things considered, I think that's a pretty solid little percentage game."

A Chicago Reader blog post also speculates that since there's usually a blackout window of time on festival contracts for artists to play a city before and after the festival's dates, any band that's skipping Chicago on a U.S. tour between April and July could technically be playing Lolla.

The post lists possibilities such as Bon Iver, No Age, Peter Bjorn And John, Animal Collective, Atmosphere, Bat For Lashes, Jason Mraz, Lykke Li, Fall Out Boy, M.I.A., PJ Harvey and Lil Wayne.

This book caught my eye today because of the title. For some reason, I just found the title Sexuality, Law and Legal Practice and the Reformation in Norway, to be completely out of place amongst the other books I have been cataloging such as: Constitutional Law, The People and Their Peace, Cross-border Internet Dispute Resolution, and so on. I know though that there will be someone out there who will be researching Norwegian laws on "Bestiality and Homosexuality", "Moral Looseness", etc. So I support the fact that the law library owns this book for those few people who are into learning about sex crimes, in Norway, during Medieval times.

So I took the "What early 80's wrestler are you?" quiz on Facebook and was hoping to get Miss Elizabeth (I know she wasn't an actual wrestler but she did get thrown in the ring a couple of times). I then started wondering whatever happened to one of my childhood idols (I loved the hair, the beaded and sequin dresses, and love story with Macho Man). I googled her and found out that she died from overdosing on pain killers and vodka, while partying with Lex Luger (also a wrestler). Pinhole camera!!!

One of my many purchases in Austin was a put it together yourself pinhole camera called a "Kikkerland Solagrapher". The other day I spent a couple of hours pasting and taping this little thing together. SUCCESS! Its a different kind of pinhole camera. Instead of just one shot it actually fits a whole role of 35 mm film in it. I went out that day to experiment and took all 24 the shots on the roll. I fucked up and only a handful came out...but they are still neat regardless. Today I went around the fan again experimenting some more with my little paper camera and I am so excited to see how these turn out! I think they are going to be better :)! I'll keep you updated.

Josh Ritter in Norfolk

So I went to Norfolk with Curtis last night to see David Shulz and Josh Ritter and his band play at the Attics. They were all amazing! Seriously awesome show and great venue...its a total seated house with great views from anywhere you are sitting. We went back stage to see Josh Ritter play his last song and then played pass the pigs with the band! (I won...by the way) First back stage experience! Sorry I'm a total dork cause I'm geekin' out about going back stage...whatevs.
We all stayed up until way too late hanging out on the bus and then Curtis and I slept in the Trail-Blay until we were sober enough to drive home (til six in the mornin'!). What a great night!!!! I can't believe I forgot my camera!!!

So B and I have a house guest for about a month and she is wonderful. Despite the fact that she has bought us wine and food, she brought us children's books.
We have a huge stack of library books that C checked out from the Richmond Public Library (extra points for her) to help bring joy. She said she likes to read a children's book if she needs to relieve some stress or just to read something that is fun and happy. I read a couple this morning before work and I have to say the stories did put me in a good mood, despite this horrible weather.

I'm so frustrated with people who are refusing to wake up to the reality of their situation. Seriously, how much more does a person have to take before they realize the person they are with is not the right one? Why subject yourself to so much emotional abuse, unhappiness, and fear of if he or she loves you over and over and over again? I am so sick of people who refuse to look at the reality of their life and make a change. If something is consistently not working, it is time for a change. If someone only keeps talking without acting, then it is time for a change. If you keep crying over the same thing, it is time for a change. If you keep hoping and getting disappointed, it is time for a change. Get the heck out of a relationship if you are more unhappy than happy. Get the hell out of a relationship if you are doing all of the giving. People are sick of hearing the same problems caused by the same person over and over and over again. Most of all people get tired of hearing complaints and the sadness and you are not doing anything about it. Find the courage to leave someone who obviously does not care about you. There is more to life than catering to one person. Put yourself first, love yourself first, and find yourself first or you. If you don't you will always be stuck in an unhealthy relationship b/c you will always for the other person because you don't have any idea of your own wants and needs.

So glad to be back in Richmond! So so glad...
Went out to Austin, TX to visit some good friends that live out there and see SXSW. This is my fourth year making the journey and Christine Miller, whom is a good friend of my from high school, made it out too!!!
It is hard to live with three other people for one week in a 600 square one room apartment! But we had tons of fun and saw lots of awesome music. Walked around constantly in the 80 degree sunny weather. Dirtied our feet. Dirtied our bellies. Took LOTS of pictures. We did so much that I am still exhausted!
I feel though, that it is my duty to let you know some of this new music that really struck a cord with me!

From California. Drove out with his drummer and set up (illegally) on the side of the street and played all day and night. He said a couple of police officers had passed and glanced at him but nobody said a thing. He drew in large crowds and basically knocked our socks off. We came back the next day to see him again and buy his self-produced CD's that had sold out the day before.

A Flamenco weekend

Amanda, Emily, and I went to the Flamenco Festival at VCU Saturday night and it was amazing. The dancers were breathtaking and the musicians were incredible. I felt so lucky taking in this beautiful performance and applaud the VCU music department for hosting such a great festival. I wish I could describe how magical of an eveing that was but it's hard to put into words. I would suggest checking out the music to get an idea. Then on Sunday at work we had 2 Flamenco guitarist play during brunch at Aziza's. The musicians at Aziza's were not related to anything that was going on at VCU this weekend, which was ironic. Anyways, these 2 impressive guitarist will be coming back this Sunday so you all should come check out some great music and food.

What not to do at the Doctor's office

This heads up is from my lovely friend Desiree:

Things patients do that annoy me:
1) call three-four times asking for directions....WRITE it down the first time or mapquest it
2) back up into the parking spot...you waste time doing that and you look stupid
3) show up 20 minutes late and expect you are going to get in RIGHT away
4)calll in for a refill but don't know what pharmacy you want it called into...if you want i will just make up my own pharmacy and you can find it on your own
5) act stupid
6) reach over my desk and grab something off of it
7)call me and demand to talk to the doctor...im sorry but the doctor is busy and i can leave a message for her to call you but i will not interrupt an appointment so she can get on the phone with you for you to tell her that you need a prescription refill when I can certainly do that for you!

I do appreciate a very happy cheerful patient! or at least a considerate patient that realizes I am one person sooo please stop calling me and interrupting my day bc you didnt write down the address the first 3 times I gave it to you and now you are lost.

Have you ever been in a staff meeting and see something that makes you come so close to losing it. Last week at our monthly staff meeting the director is talking about signing the employee evaluation forms and Sally who is sitting next to me whips her head around and gives me this "oh no" look and I about lost it. It took everything I had not to bust out laughing due to the look Sally gave me...I'm still giggling about it. Then today I left my travel mug on the kitchen counter while waiting for the hot water to boil. Sally comes busting into my cubicle saying, "What a ditz I am". She told me she started drinking out of my travel mug, thought she had put coffee in it, looks down, and realizes she was drinking out of my mug and not hers. She informed me she washed to top but I might want to wash it more and for some reason I can't stop laughing over this. I don't know what it is about her but I think it has a lot to do with her facial expressions and statements that makes me laugh so much! I <3 spastic people.

Why I dislike chain restaurants

Restaurants like Applebee's, Friday's, Olive Garden, etc. Have made it to where people have this mentality that they can change a menu anyway they see fit. This could be a substitution, a deletion, an addition, or asking for something that is not even on the menu. Also, many people expect all of these demands, because they are certainly not requesting these changes, without any additional charge. So when people who typically eat at these chain restaurants venture outside of their suburban homes to a small privately owned restaurant and expect to make the same changes it is not the people I get annoyed with (although I really do) it is the freaking chain restaurants who have made it so accommodating to these ignorant people! PEOPLE, chefs who own and/or operate small restaurants like The White Dog, Mezzanine, Edo's, Aziza's, etc. create menus specific to what is in season and specific towards what flavors and textures go well with each other, and because they know how to create a damn good dish from there own skills! So to order something off the menu and want to change it all around is so stupid to me because you are basically insulting a chef's knowledge and expertise. Cook your own meal if you know what you like and are craving. Also, please don't ever be as ignorant as asking if a chef can make something that is NOT on the menu. God bless the ignorant woman who came into Aziza's on Saturday and asked for French Toast (which Billy made) and then said we should have french toast and waffles added to our menu. Please let that woman forever stay away and forever go to Cracker Barrel.

Obama’s Council on Women and Girls

President Obama has just signed an executive order establishing the “White House Council on Women and Girls.” The purpose of the new group “is to ensure that American women and girls are treated fairly in all matters of public policy,” he said at the signing. “Our progress in these areas is an important measure of whether we are truly fulfilling the promise of our democracy for all our people.” He defined those areas as economic security, a balance between work and family, violence against women and women’s health.

In part the council will be a switching station for the existing bureaucracy, getting all Federal agencies to focus on “the challenges confronted by women and girls to ensure that all Cabinet and Cabinet-level agencies consider how their policies and programs impact women and families,” the White House said. But if it goes beyond that, and creates rather than simply coordinates change, what exactly should that change be? What are the issues and policies today that affect “women and girls” to the exclusion of, or more dramatically than, “men and boys”?

There is no one more vocal than I about the fact that women and men experience the realms of family and work differently (you can find some examples of my thoughts here and here.) But I think that too many of the problems women and girls have in the world stem from the fact that the problems are considered “their” problems — “women’s problems” — rather than problems that both genders share.

Let’s review just a few:

Unequal Pay. This was the first to be tackled by the new administration with the signing of the Ledbetter Act. And certainly this is a concern for women, who still earn less, on average, than men (though the gap has narrowed sharply, and much of the difference is due to different career paths men and women take — more on that below — than on overt discrimination.) Yet to call this a “woman’s problem” is to glide over the fact that the pay difference hurts more than just women. Pay discrimination is a family issue. In a two-parent family, it reduces the income of the entire household, and is often a determinative factor in tipping a single parent family from stable to impoverished.

Maternity leave. By definition this is on a woman’s radar. And the United States lags woefully behind most of the rest of the western world in the amount of time mothers get to take off after giving birth. But we also lag woefully behind in paternity leave, too. And to compartmentalize this as a need only of women, is to leave out nearly half of all parents. Studies show that men already feel stigmatized about taking the minimal leave available to them, and that reluctance hurts who? Among others, women.

Childcare. There is no greater evidence that society still considers children the responsibility of mothers, rather than of parents, than the fact that we call childcare a woman’s issue. It is. Because that’s the way the world currently works. But if the White House council’s only role in this area is to increase child care options for women — rather than also prodding social norms so that it targets more than just women — then it will only have done part of the job.

Work/Life Balance. Today’s workplace is built for a man — requiring the fiercest hours and attention in the early years if you are going to make it up that ladder. Fine for a 1950s man with a wife at home. Tolerable for a 2000s man with a working spouse. Not really okay for a working woman, who, biology dictates, has to use those same early years if she wants to have children.

What women need is a system that allows stepping out and stepping back in without penalty. And for those of us who can’t afford to leave — and that means most of us — we need a system that allows for flexibility and control over our lives. That system must factor in periods of great ambition and achievement, mixed with periods of slow but steady work, all with the understanding that ups and downs make a career, and don’t automatically knock you off the track.

While women have had the more visible juggling act in the past few decades, and have led the demands for change, all they are really asking is to be able to earn a living and care for their children in a ratio that isn’t perfect, but is less lopsided than the status quo. Giving them that means giving it to girls AND boys, too — and to the women AND men they will grow up to be. And a system like that will change men’s lives as well.

Bottle Shock

This movie in a way teaches you a lot about how California wine became so popular. I have normally been against buying U.S. made wine because I like to support other countries not so big. I like to buy a Malbec from Argentina or Vinho Verde from Portugal and so on. After watching this movie I now have more interest in trying and buying wines from Napa Valley. This is what I love about drinking wine which is getting excited about and trying different wines from various regions. So this movie now makes me want to start buying California wines but only from smaller vineyards of course...still don't like to support the big "wine corporations".

So last night I watched Iron Chef America and it was crazy interesting. I was hooked on the show awhile back but stopped watching it. However, I'm in this cooking phase and am again interested in watching the Food Network. Last night I watched San Francisco based Chef Mourad Lahlou compete against Chef Cat Cora. The secret ingredient was Red Snapper but the different ways the Chefs cooked this ingredient was amazing.

First thing I have never heard of was fried ketchup. Ketchup was put in a batter, vacuum sealed, and then fried. I think that is how it went...but any case this ketchup was served with a "fish and chips basket".

Next ingredient was black garlic! I loooove me some garlic and I have never heard of black garlic. So I looked it up online and came across this link http://www.ideasinfood.com/ideas_in_food/2008/04/black-garlic.html

and for an image it doesn't look appetizing but it would be neat to cook with maybe one time.

In any case this was a great Iron Chef episode and if you can catch a repeat I would suggest tuning in for some unique cooking techniques and ingredients. Oh! There was also some F bombs that were dropped so a little bit of drama in the kitchen also makes for some interesting viewing.

...thought it sounded like a pretty girls name. Googled it. Found this.

Vivek Kundra will be the Federal Chief Technology Officer.

President Obama today announced that Vivek Kundra, chief technology officer for the District, will be the federal chief information officer.

It’s a job that did not exist in previous administrations; Obama, who leveraged social networks, text messages and other Internet tools on the campaign trail, promised to create a technology czar with the aim of helping the government operate more efficiently.

The newly created federal position will operate under the auspices of the White House. Kundra, 34, is expected to oversee how government agencies purchase and use information technology and will be in charge of all federal technology spending. He also will be responsible for making sure agencies’ networks and systems work together and share information while maintaining security and privacy standards.
